I've only played it occasionally in the past, as I've been far too busy to piece together a decent rig, much less a quality wheel. It's worth it in my mind though, and if I had the time, I'd definitely get back into it. Good variety of types of racing, tracks, etc. I still love Live for Speed, but iRacing is insanely popular.

I used to when I was more involved in racing than I am now. It is worth it if you're going to use it for something. If you're just going to goof off, a game console is fine.

I am. Its pretty good. You start off as rookie then move up the license classes and can race in more races. However, each new race, track, car needs to be purchased which adds up. I only have the Miata and Stock Cars which the game came with. I still am not 100% certain how everything works, but I do enjoy it mixed in with Asseto Corsa. iRacing takes each incident very seriously.

If you are looking for multiplayer gameplay using purpose-built racecars, absolutely. Nothing else comes close. However, the game (sim) does have its flaws.

The biggest con is its start-up costs, you need a wheel to be competitive + initial subscription + content purchases. Outside of that it is ~$9 per year if you play it right.

I had a detailed post a while back about iRacing FAQ's but Kinja ate it, I may need to rewrite it at some point.

Do you have an idea of what you want to race (i.e. NASCAR, F1, GT3?)

Although I haven't tried it, I've read that it's based on a game released over 12 years ago now. I'm not a fan of subscription-based games, but it seems reasonable enough, I'd suggest other games over it.

It really depends on what you're in to. I'm generally of the opinion that you get what you pay for. iRacing can get expensive really fast, but if you're into racing and want to have good, clean online races with people who aren't allergic to the brake pedal in T1, it's the best way to go. The safety rating system makes it so that assholes don't get to advance, and if they're bad enough, they'll be banned. I don't play it nearly as much as I used to since I have an actual race car now, but I still have the subscription and play with it from time to time. That being said, if you want to get into it, you have to get, like, really into it to be competitive or even to be able to finish a race well enough. It's not like Forza or Gran Turismo. The learning curve is steep, and you can't expect to just put your foot down and go. If you brake too late for a turn or go in too hot, you're going to be on the grass, just like in real life. There's no AI to save you.

how nice of a wheel do you need? I have an old Microsoft Sidewinder wheel and pedal set.

Looks like they are running a promo right now with 50% off memberships.

Since you want to run NASCAR, I would suggest signing up with this promo, PR-2015NASCARDAYTONA. Gives you 3 months + Ford GT + Chevy Gen6 + Daytona for $10. At minimum to compete in NASCAR you need the Gen6 so this promo is definitely worth it if you are interested. Plus it gives you a GT3 car if you feel like doing right turns.

If you are on a budget the Sidewinder will work just fine. You just need the finer control. Optimally a 900 degree wheel (DFGT, G27) yields the best results/experience.

how long will that promo code be valid? What computer specs are suggested?

I don't know about the promo code sometimes they go to the end of the month, other times they go for many months.

Computer specs are really minimal because the graphics are a bit outdated. Mine is a Core 2 Duo 3GHz, 32bit Windows, 4 GB RAM, and an ATI HD graphics card and I can run it at low-medium settings getting about 30 to 80 FPS in race depending on the number of cars. Any computer made in the last 3 years should run it no problem.

I've got 6gb ram, 64bit, Intel i5 @ 2.5GHz. Graphics card is nothing special
